Hi,
I have installed Alfresco Labs 3 and followed all the instructions found here: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Installing_Labs_3 but when I try to login to the share using "admin" as the username and passworld like it says here: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Installing_Labs_3#Starting_the_web_client then I just get this error:
Quote:
Failed to Login
The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognised.
Anyone know the right username/password combo or what the problem could be?

I'm getting the exact same problem.
There's no application under the alfresco context anymore.

No all I get when I try to open that page is a 404.
The only way I can get the server to start is by using c:/alfresco/tomcat/bin/startup.bat and I get some errors when it tries to deploy alfresco.war
Here's the log:

I have the same problem from time to time. It seems to occur after restarting the server and I got rid of the problem after logging in to the old alfresco-client and creating a new user. After this I could log on to Share using any user.
I did not experiencing this problem the first time downloaded Share, but after upgrading and restarting the server. Frustrating not to know what causes the authentication failure though. Nothing was printed out in the log.

I am afraid that I have no experience with Alfresco. This is my first time with this product. ;)
I have just installed Alfresco Labs 3 in a new system (no previous versions). How could I login in the old alfresco-client? There is no 'http://localhost:8080/alfresco/' page.
Thanks in advance.

Had the same problem, but it was solved after I downloaded alfresco.war file (packaged for Linux) and replaced the one shipped with installer.

To clarify, you need to have the old Alfresco client working at http://localhost:8080/alfresco/. If this isn't working after following installation please explain how you did the installation as there might be an issue with the files / instructions.
The previous Alfresco client starts the repository and related services up. This is used by Alfresco Share client to provide all the content services using web scripts. You can run the Alfresco Share client in a separate Tomcat instance on a separate server. Even multiple servers. However, they will need to connect back to the Alfresco reposiory services.

Got it working, finally.
It seems that the problem is with the windows binary download.
I downloaded the zip version(http://downloads.sourceforge.net/alfresco/alfresco-labs-tomcat-3a.1032.zip?modtime=1217543689&big_mirror=0) and it worked just fine.

As it turns out, it's not problem with the windows binary.
It seems that this problem occurs when first start Alfresco and you don't wait for all the startup process to finish. This takes a couple of minutes.

Yes, it seems that it is just a matter of waiting before it works. You have to wait some additional time after the "Server startup in xxx ms" has appeared.

When the port was returned to 8080, it reconciled though the same problem
existed when the port had been changed from 8080.

Alfresco Share login continued to fail for us even with the above suggestions. Our problem was we had changed the default port from 8080 to something else. There are several config files that must be changed to accommodate this:
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/administration-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/dictionary-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/content-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/authoring-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/access-control-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/action-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/authentication-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/repository-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/wsdl/classification-service.wsdl
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/share/WEB-INF/urlrewrite.xml
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/share/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/pagerenderer-config.xml
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/share/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/webscript-framework-config-test.xml
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/share/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/webscript-framework-config.xml
* $ALF_HOME/tomcat/webapps/share/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco/webscripts/org/alfresco/indexall.get.mediawiki.ftl
After changing these files, login worked.
Hope this helps

No other users but admin are able to log into our Share, but all users can log into http://localhost:8080/alfresco/
I get
The server has been running for days so it is not the (re)starting issue and we use the default 8080 port.
Any ideas?

I get the identical problem ("Failed to Login") as the original post.
Prior to my "Share" installation I had an older Alfresco running, and now neither works. Tomcat starts, but can't get further.

Man how frustrating was this install.
I tired Vista, Xp, Labs 3, 2.9 version etc.
So i finally tried installing all the components individually
1st - JDK
2nd - Open Office
3rd - Alfresco
And now it works no problems. I can login and i'm up and working so far so good.
Maybe this helps you or not, might be worth a try

So ewentworth has right.

My "Share login" problems were a bit different than yours but it might be relevant to mention it here. They were related to the fact that I did not expose the "alfresco" application via the default Tomcat virtual host "localhost". As a result the "Share" application was not able to find the Alfresco urls correctly because by default all the configuration files under the "Share" application point to Alfresco resources assuming that it lives under the default Tomcat virtual host "localhost" . Most people who use the Alfresco/Tomcat bundle don't have to deal with this but I chose to deploy the "alfresco.war" file under an existing Tomcat server. I like having more control of the Tomcat server. This is an installation of "alfresco-labs-war-3c" under Ubuntu Server 8.10 with Tomcat 6. The database server is MySQL 5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.4 hosted in a separate Ubuntu Server 8.10.
Anyway, here's the story: If you are not exposing your Alfresco application via the Tomcat default virtual host "localhost" but instead you are using a more formal virtual host like "www.mydomain.com"; then, in order to get the "Share" application to work (http://www.mydomain.com:8080/share) ALL the configuration files under "$TOMCAT-INSTALL-PATH/webapps/$ALFRESCO-PATH/share" MUST be changed to replace any references to "localhost" to the more formal "www.mydomain.com" virtual host. That's because, if Alfresco was declared to live as a resource under the virtual directory "www.mydomain.com" Tomcat will not serve or resolve the url "http://localhost:8080/alfresco" to anything it knows and your "Share" application will give you "login" errors. Your "Share" application must point to "http://www.mydomain.com:8080" (or whatever other port you are using for Tomcat) so that it can successfully link and integrate with the "Alfresco" resources.
Sorry if this is confusing but my first language is Spanish.
Best regards,
Alejandro.

2 solutions to the login problem cause i also had many times
if alfresco worked till your first restart you didnt enable the db.schema.update=true in /tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco/extension/custom-repository.properties
i couldn't fix this until i did a new install of the system
2n solution if it never worked you should get the java6db module (derby database) its not included in java6se (also in apt on linux its an own package) and then change to mysql like in this tutorial: http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Installing_Alfresco_Lab_3b_on_Ubuntu_8.04#Change_HSQL_Database_to_MySQL_Database
(Windows way is kinda similar) the binary didnt use my input of using mysql at setup i changed same files as in linux description.
if you restart alfresco on linux use the alfresco.sh stop and then kill the java process manually (ps -waux and then kill PID)
hope it helped a bit

I like to add on more reason the login to share could fail. I just installed 3.0final and got the same error "The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognized." when accessing http://localhost:8080/share.
It turned out, my local windows firewall blocked tomcat from accessing itself (share accessing the alfresco webapp at localhost). So make sure the tomcat process can open http connections to localhost.
Hope it helps someone.

I have waited till the "INFO: Server startup in 363663 ms" in the server console.
But of no use. I still get this login problem - when I try to login into SHARE.
I am able to login into Alfresco, but not into SHARE.
It keeps on saying - "Failed to Login: The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognized."
I used Alfresco-Labs-3Stable-Full-Setup.exe to install in my windows laptop.
This is very frustrating. I have also removed the database and installed a new Alfresco copy. But, still having these issues!
Any help?! Thank you!!

Hi people,
just a summary, because this question pops up from time to time o0O( note to myself - that should go into the wiki ...)
1) The login screen of "/share" is hardcoded. Seeing that only indicates tomcat is running and share.war has been exploded
2) follow the alfresco.log and wait for alfresco.war startup & share.war startup, share is always deployed/started after alfresco and takes a while. (Tipp: once the WARs are exploded and if you dont change anything in the wars
3) Alfresco and Share run under "localhost:8080". The port 7070 is for the MS sharepoint protocol. Openoffice is on 50500, I think. Your firewall must allow all those ports.
4) If you want to change these ports, make sure to get all config files. MikeHH wrote something about that somewhere
5) One tip is changing all URLs from "localhost:xxx" to "www.domain.com:xxx", when exposing the system on a public system. (I did not test that one yet).
6) After startup in alfresco.log, "startup taking xxxxx ms", if you are still unsure, check tomcat/logs/catalina.out,
7) Next check, try to access "http://localhost:8080/alfresco" - Logging in there means alfresco is ok
8) if 7 is ok, try "http://localhost:8080/share" - that should work as well, if you started to early, it hangs sometimes. Restarting the server did help me. Since v3.2, I did not have that anymore, though.
9) Last but not least ... Start windows explorer or MS Office and open a webdav folder "http://localhost:7070/"
DId I forget something ?
Norgan

Did I shorten your search, gimme a point, I want one too :-D ... oh ... and update the Wiki PLEASE.

Hi all,
What ewentworth has posted worked for me, since I was not using the default port. By the way, I am testing Alfresco 3.2 on a Windows 2008 Server, and with the Windows full setup file, seems to be OK.
Thank you everyone!!

Hi
We have solved it.
The authentification between Share and Alfresco is managed by webscript-framework-config.xml files (both in Alfresco and Share file structure)
/opt/alfresco/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco
/opt/alfresco/tomcat/webapps/share/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco
Review your configuration in these files and check that the ports and the URL´s are correctly configured. In our case we had renamed "Alfresco" application to "Docs4Lawyers" so we had to change this string in the files. After rebooting it worked.
Applied on 3.2 Labs.
Hope it work for you.

Either your MySQL instance isn't running, or a firewall is blocking the connection.

I get the "The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognized." error message with a fresh OS install (Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition, no gui) and fresh Alfresco 3.2 Community install. I'm simply trying to use the default port. I can't use my usual workaround (log into Alfresco from a web browser on the server machine first, then I would be able to log into Alfresco remotely) because I'm not using a GUI/window manager (e.g., Gnome/KDE) on the server machine.
Is there a real fix for this yet?

heh. I checked the logs, saw the mysql error and forgot the command-line installer never asked me for mysql db info. manually set up the mysql db, restarted Alfresco and BAM! for the first time ever it logged me in without a error msg. (still have this login problem on my other server though).
thanx Mike

I found a solution for this issue on CentOS 5.3.
I had this same issue with Alfresco 3.2 on CentOS 5.3.
I solved the login problem by following the JDK install instructions on the Alfresco WAR install instructions for CentOS 5.3 at the Alfresco Lab's Wiki.http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Installing_Alfresco_Community_3.2_WAR_on_Centos_5.3. Basically, it looks like on CentOS you need to install SUN's Java 1.6 not Redhat's. I installed SUN's JAVA, installed Alfresco using the GUI Alfresco installer and then I edited the alfresco.sh file to point to SUN's JAVA at /usr/java/default for the Java home directory:
export JAVA_HOME="/usr/java/default"After this change and a restart, everything works.Also, one of the symptoms of this "login issue" was that http://localhost:8080/alfresco returned a 404 error because alfresco.war wasn't starting. I found various exceptions in the alfresco.log file relating to springframework and alfresco.war. I hope this helps!

Was trying to follow Peter's solution above, but my /opt/alfresco/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco directory is empty except for 2 directories --> extension and module.
should there be an xml file here? not sure where to go from here...
Thanks,

I should add that I only started having this issue after installing a custom dashlet, everything was working fine prior.
When installing the dashlet I updated my alfresco.war file with mmt, but the dashlet seems to be working for other organizations.

Seems I'm having the same issue as everyone else - installed 3.2r to a Windows 2003 standard server - followed wiki exactly but am unable to login to the /share still. Have reinstalled a couple of times. I am able to login to /alfresco as guest. I've read through the thread and followed the suggestions to no avail. I have disabled Windows firewall completely. I do get the /share login screen but it will not take the credentials I've created. Based on the thread this has been an ongoing issue for some time.
I am not experienced with Alfresco, or mysql at all so I'm not sure where to look in the log files and what corrections to make. whenever I attempt login all I get is:
Failed to Login
The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognized
what specifically do I need to do to get this work? VERY frustrating

1. uninstall mysql and all java already install in the computer
2. run C:\Alfresco\extras\databases\mysql\db_remove.bat
3. uninstall alfresco
4.install alfresco Alfresco-Community-3.3g-Full-Setup.exe
5.run C:\Alfresco\extras\databases\mysql\db_setup.bat
6.start alfresco server

Hi,
I am getting a connection refused error with Alfresco Share (see below). Is there a definitive way to change the ports so that Alfresco Share can be used on a port other than 8080. There are a number of different suggestions on the Forums.
Thanks

The easiest option would be to deploy another instance of Share and customise it appropriately.
Thanks,

What is interesting is the issue is host specific. I have installed the application on a different host in our environment and it has worked. I have tried a third host and it doesnt work on that machine.
I suspect that there is a port clash or something host specific why I am getting the issue.
It would be good if there was a troubleshooting guide that consolidated all the information that has been put together on this issue.

How would you decide which login page to show?
Put that logic in the slingshot-login.ftl and you've got your two login pages.
Thanks,
Mike

My requirement is to use different login pages for same instance, with different urls.
for example
with first url i need to open one customized login page and with second url i want to open another customized login page
but i want to use same instance for both login pages. just login pages should be different.

You'd still need some logic in the application. Consider when someone bookmarks a Share page. We redirect to THE slingshot-login page template. In that case, unless you inserted logic to decide which version of the login page to show, your users would see different login pages depending on how they arrived. That sounds pretty confusing for the users.
Thanks,
Mike

Were you able to implement multiple login pages? Can you please share how you implemented it?
We need to have two login pages, one for external users and other for internal users. External user will go through an additional step of authentication and internal users will use the out of the box mechanism.
Customizing slingshot-login.ftl and having the logic to determine the login page is the way to go?
