Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to finding some step-by-step instructions on how to configure Alfresco so that I can edit Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, etc) online within Alfresco, rather than having to download documents and edit them offline each time.

I am using Alfresco Community version 3.0, running on an Ubuntu Linux server. Any links to articles or documentation on how to do this would be helpful.

Thanks.

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

edit offline looks the only way....but don't use download....regards

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

I'm sure that some people have been able to achieve the editing of Microsoft Office documents online within Alfresco. I understand that you need to install the SharePoint protocol for this and do some other configuration to enable it to work. But I was just wondering if anyone knows what steps to take to make this work.

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

It's not supported in v3.0 - best updating to v3.2 (right now, I can't remember which of our temporarily mad version numbers relates to v3.1)

You'll need: the SharePoint module installed, plus you'll have to access the Document Library with Internet Explorer (pref. v7.0 or v8.0) in order to activate the "Edit Online" action for Office documents.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

Our development environment is Community version 3.0, however our production environment will be Enterprise version 3.1. Will the feature of editing Microsoft Office documents online be supported in Enterprise version 3.1?

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

Mike,
Edit online is broken in several ways in v3.2 and there are some fixes in enterprise version. Can you merge those to head? Office 2007 is broken, NTLM passthru, and even when I manage to open document for online edit in office 2003 I can't save it back to Alfresco.

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

I've installed Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.1 and I have also installed the SharePoint protocol. How do I now get the action of 'Edit Online' to appear next to my list of actions for a content item?

Thanks.

Make sure you're using MSIE and are trying to edit Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

Yeah I am using Internet Explorer 7 and trying to edit a Word and Excel document.

I can see the 'Edit Online' action for MS Office documents via the Alfresco Share interface, but I cant seem to see the 'Edit Online' action via the Alfresco Web Client interface. Is there something in the install or configuration of Alfresco that I may have missed out in order to see the action via the Web Client?

Also, is it possible to see the 'Edit Online' action for MS Office documents via the Alfresco Web Client interface, or is it only possible to see the 'Edit Online' action via the Alfresco Share interface?

Thanks.

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

I'm having some trouble with this and I couldn't find any reported bugs. I'm using latest version from HEAD with vti amp installed. When I try to edit online office document it normally opens a new window with that URL on port 7070 and it offers to open or save document. I click open and document normally opens (read-write, no problems there) in excel 2007 but when I make some changes and try to save it it just stuck for a few seconds then brings up a "Document not saved" message. I've enabled full debug for sharepoint protocol but nothing shows up.

It's a Vista SP2 + Office 2007 + IE 8 client machine. Also, worth to mention is that passthru NTLM SSO is enabled and I'm pretty much confident this worked fine with basic Alfresco authentication although I didn't try it lately.

Any ideas?

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

I have now found a way to display the 'Edit Online' action next to the list of actions for a Microsoft Office content item within the Alfresco Web Client interface. Basically what you have to do is the following:

- From your apache-tomcat installation directory, navigate to the following directory: 'webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/alfresco'
- Open the 'web-client-config.xml' file
- Change the value within the '' tag from 'http' to 'webdav'
- Restart Tomcat

You should now be able to see the 'Edit Online' action icon next to a Microsoft Office document. When you click this, it will open the document in the relevant Office application (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint). You can then edit the document, save it as normal, and close the Office application. Next you simply click the 'Done Editing' action next to the working copy version of the document in Alfresco, and the file will now be checked in and updated with your relevant changes.

I have noticed that this still works even without installing the SharePoint protocol, or installing OpenOffice. However it only properly works in Microsoft Internet Explorer. I have tried doing this using Mozilla Firefox with the IE tab plug-in, but when I click the 'Edit Online' action, it prompts me with a runtime error in the browser. If I just select 'No' from the error prompt, it continues to function as normal, in that it allows me to make changes to the document, save it, and check it back in via the 'Done Editing' action.

Has anyone else got this 'Edit Online' feature to properly work within Mozilla Firefox using the IE tab plug-in?

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

Hi All,

I am new to this forum as well as webDAV.
I have scenario where I want to open word document in IE while clicking a hyperlink and want to edit. I am doing this using following code. But the document is opening in read only mode only. Can anyone suggest me alternate approach if any ? or tell me any configuration that I have to do for this to work. I also tried to change web-client-config.xml to webDav but same problem.

---code---

function onClick() {
var docUrl = "some url";

try {
var objEditor = new ActiveXObject('SharePoint.OpenDocuments.3');
if (docUrl.toString().indexOf(".doc") != -1 || docUrl.toString().indexOf(".docx") != -1
|| docUrl.toString().indexOf(".ppt") != -1 || docUrl.toString().indexOf(".pptx") != -1
|| docUrl.toString().indexOf(".xls") != -1 || docUrl.toString().indexOf(".xlsx") != -1
|| docUrl.toString().indexOf(".htm") != -1 || docUrl.toString().indexOf(".html") != -1) {
if (!objEditor.EditDocument3(window, docUrl, false)) {
alert("unable to open");
}
}
else {
window.showModalDialog(docUrl);
}
}
catch (e) {
unableToOpen = "You dont have the required software to open this file.";
alert(unableToOpen);
}
}

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

Hi kyriakos
I want to know your solution to my problem, I mentioned in the memo. Please tell me what should I do to resolve that issue. I tried changing config files in alfresco as mentioned by many people.

Thanks

Re: Edit Microsoft Office Documents Online

Hello Pankaj Mittal

i just added this code before

</alfresco-config>

<config>
      <client>
         <!-- the type of edit link to use, NOTE: inline editable will always take precedence -->
         <!-- can be: http|webdav|cifs -->
         <edit-link-type>webdav</edit-link-type>
      </client>
   </config>

in the file web-client-config-custom.xml at ....\tomcat\shared\classes\alfresco\extension folder :)
and i made a change on registry following those directions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870853

let me know if it worked for you
Cheers :lol:
